Before Maps
Anyone can promise a great trip. This page is the checklist we hold ourselves to before a journey earns the name. It is the reason our groups are small, our prices are explained rather than negotiated, and our routes often don't exist anywhere else.
No journey exists until someone has done it alone - every trail, homestay and meal, off-season, with no agenda but the place itself. If a route can't be walked honestly, it doesn't get published.
Before any journey opens, a small pilot group runs it end to end. Timings, meals, rooms and rest points are tested with real travellers - and the honest debrief is published. If it doesn't pass, it never launches.
Drivers, homestay hosts and local guides are chosen over years of repeat work, not scraped from directories. The people who meet you have been met first.
Permits, transfers, meals and pacing are handled before you land. The measure of a good day on a Before Maps journey is that you never once think about logistics.
Every journey carries one all-inclusive price per person - what's in, what's out, and why new routes cost more than established ones. No tiers inside a group, no surprises on the trail.
Departures are capped at 6–8 explorers (never more than 12), because the group shapes the place it moves through. Private journeys are simply your own party, nothing else changes.
Every claim on this page traces back to something published in our scouting log or field notes. Read the trail record, then ask us anything it doesn't answer.
