The Trail from Triund to Laka Glacier

Triund is notorious among Indian hikers: a 9-kilometer trail from McLeodganj that climbs 1,100 vertical meters to a dramatic ridgeline overlooking the Kangra plains. On sunny weekends, the ridge can see hundreds of day-trippers. However, what 95% of casual hikers never realize is that Triund is simply the first staging ground for a much grander high-mountain traverse.

The Morning Push (05:45 AM): Leaving our ridge camp at dawn while the lower valley was still asleep, I pushed past the Triund perimeter onto the high shepherd trail heading northeast toward the Dhauladhar wall. The forest of rhododendron and oak gives way almost immediately to sheer granite slabs, scree slopes, and icy mountain streams.

The Moraine Traverse: Past the seasonal shepherd settlement of Snowline (3,100m), all signs of commercial trails vanish. Navigation relies entirely on stone cairns (chortens) balanced on glacial erratics. The trail climbs steeply through a boulder field before entering the glacial basin of Laka Glacier (3,350m).

The Glacial Cirque: Laka is a high-altitude snowline basin nestled directly beneath the sheer 4,600-meter granite precipice of Moon Peak and Indrahar Pass. In October, the temperature at the glacier moraine sits at -2°C at 08:00 AM. The silence is profound - broken only by the intermittent crack of falling seracs and the whistle of alpine wind through the crags.

Route Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous. While Triund requires basic cardiovascular stamina, the scramble from Triund to Laka demands surefootedness over shifting moraine boulders and proper ankle support.

Integration: We incorporate the Laka Glacier push as the crowning highlight of our Dharamshala & Kangra journey. It gives travelers the thrill of high-altitude glacial terrain without needing technical mountaineering gear.
