Why We Run Pilot Trips Before Opening Applications

Every Before Maps journey goes through three stages before it opens to the public.

Stage 1: Solo Scouting. I go alone. No itinerary, no timeline. I walk the trails, sleep in the homestays, eat the food, and talk to the people. Most scouting trips last 7-14 days. About 40% of them don't become journeys - the access is too difficult, the community isn't ready, or the experience isn't worth the price.

Stage 2: Pilot Trip. If a destination passes the scouting stage, I take 3-5 hand-picked travelers on a pilot. This is where we test pacing, accommodation, food quality, guide performance, and group dynamics. Pilot travelers pay a reduced rate and give detailed feedback.

Stage 3: Public Opening. Only after the pilot succeeds does the journey open for applications. By this point, I've walked every trail at least twice, stayed in every homestay, and built relationships with every local partner.

This process is slow and expensive. It means we can only launch 3-4 new journeys per year. But it's also why our travelers trust us with places they've never heard of.
