Before Maps operates on five principles. They're non-negotiable.

1. Scout first, sell later. Every destination is personally explored before it becomes a journey. No exceptions. This means we launch fewer journeys than competitors, but every one of them is tested.

2. Small groups only. 6-12 people maximum. This isn't a marketing choice - it's a logistical one. Homestays can't handle 30 people. Trails get damaged. Communities get overwhelmed. Small groups are the only way to visit these places responsibly.

3. Application-based booking. We don't take everyone. Not because we're exclusive, but because fit matters. A strenuous 12-day trek in Zanskar is not for everyone. An honest conversation upfront prevents a bad experience later.

4. Local-first economics. Our guides are local. Our homestays are family-run. Our food is sourced from the community. At least 60% of every journey price stays in the local economy.

5. Transparency over marketing. We publish our scouting notes, our pilot reports, and our pricing breakdowns. If a journey has problems, we say so. If a place isn't ready for visitors, we don't take them there.

These principles cost us speed and scale. We're okay with that. We'd rather run 15 excellent journeys a year than 50 mediocre ones.
